Plant a tree to reduce your tea’s carbon footprint

Through most of our actions we emit, directly or indirectly, CO2 which has a negative impact on our environment and contributes to climate change. However, the level of emissions is unevenly distributed around the world. Data from the World Bank in 2016 shows that, for instance in Germany, each person causes an average of 8.8 metric tons of CO2 per year, whereas in Tanzania it is only 0.2 tons per person. Unfairly, however, it is precisely the people who emit the least CO2 that are most affected by the negative effects, like the small-scale farmers we work with. These effects of climate change include unpredictable rains and extended drought.

At Kazi Yetu we try to work as sustainable as possible, but some CO2 emissions we simply cannot avoid, like shipping our tea from Tanzania to Europe. This is why we decided to collaborate with Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT).

One tree, many positive effects

Apart from supplying Kazi Yetu with organically grown, delicious spices and herbs, SAT does an impressive work promoting sustainable agriculture. The Tanzanian NGO trains small-scale farmers in holistic agroecological farming methods but also provides support when it comes to  market access, logistics, post-harvest handling etc. Having lots of agroecological knowledge and experience on the ground SAT also started a carbon offsetting program called FairCarbon4Us.

The FairCarbon4Us program works like this:

  • You purchase a tree.
  • A small-scale farmer receives training and a small allowance for planting and taking care of the tree.
  • The tree improves soil fertility, prevents soil erosion and increases biodiversity. Furthermore, the tree will function as a source of income for the farmer.

In that way, FairCarbon4Us combines socioeconomic development with the regeneration of biodiversity and climate change mitigation. A win-win-win: for the small-scale farmer, the environment and for Kazi Yetu and ultimately you as our customer.
